The inhabitants of Copan did not call the great city as we do today, it is believed by epigraphers that they used at least 3 different ways of writing their name, as proposed by Matthew Looper: xuk which means “corner” or “summit”, xukpi, meaning corner bundle and xukup, meaning “motmot” a kind of bird. These names reflected Copan's position in the southeast corner of the land that was occupied by the Maya- speaking peoples. Copan's Emblem Glyph is the head of a bat or “Zotz” in Mayan language, complimenting the glyph is the title for Holy King or “K'uhul Ajaw”. When read together it would read the Holy King of Copan.
