• The Copan National Park is treated as a Monument with National & Worldwide importance, even more so after being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, as such Copan has generated ample interest from tourists, government figures and scientists. The Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History (IHAH) along with the Copan Archaeological Project (PAC) and consultants from different organizations have created a Management and Development Plan. This plan encompasses the many aspects required to maintain and improve the Copan National Park.

  • Objectives for the Management and Development of the Copan National Park

  1. To protect and preserve the present archaeological resources within the park's limits.

  2. To offer interpretation and environmental education programs to educate visitors, the local population and Honduran visitors about the values of the Copan National Park and the importance of the protection of this and other outstanding cultural and natural sites in the country.

  3. To promote scientific investigation of the park's cultural and natural features and those of the surrounding areas.

  4. To preserve the natural biodiversity in the park's forests.

  5. To watch over the archaeological features outside the park's grounds and present within the Copan River Valley, so that they may be protected and preserved, facilitating for this purpose, the necessary studies and required vigilance for its continued safe keeping.

  6. To coordinate and cooperate the provision of tourism services and recreational activities for visitors to the region and to the park with the relevant agencies, so long as these activities cause no negative impacts on the natural and cultural resources.

  7. To contribute to the region's socio-economic development by means of economical benefits resulting from the execution of this plan.
