Archaeologists have dug some tunnels in between construction phases at some structures in Copan to show the buildings buried below. You can view the bright original stucco through a protective glass panel, and see the care that was taken to preserve the sacred temple of Rosalila at the time the people of Copan started building a new construction phase over it. These tunnels extend into the East Plaza showing some early cosmological stucco carvings, which include a huge macaw mask, as well as some other buried temple facades and crypts including the Galindo tomb. Another reason these tunnels were dug was to show the way in which construction fill was used to increase the size of the buildings at Copan. ½ Home ½ Info ½ Arts ½ Sciences ½ Travel ½ Copan Map ½ Contact Us ½ |
